What is a retirement rollover?

A rollover moves eligible retirement savings into an IRA or another eligible retirement plan. Rules differ for 401(k), 403(b), TSP, IRA, and governmental 457(b) accounts. Compare costs, withdrawal rules, investments, and benefits before moving money; a rollover is not automatically the best choice.

Is a rollover taxable?

An eligible direct rollover of pre-tax retirement plan funds to a traditional IRA generally defers income tax. Moving pre-tax funds to a Roth IRA is generally taxable. Not all distributions qualify. Confirm eligibility and tax treatment with your plan administrator and a qualified tax professional.

Does a rollover guarantee retirement income?

No. A rollover moves assets; it does not itself guarantee income or returns. The Lifetime Paycheck explores retirement income concepts to help you think about how your savings fit your goals. Request your free copy below.
